Book 3, again

Karel and Baz’s story took us at least 5 times longer to complete than any other book. There was definitely a trauma dump that needed a lot of refining. We needed to present this story at its healthiest process and outcome, which took some work. We wrote, deleted, rewrote, refined, deleted, reexamined, and rewrote again. This one has so many deleted scenes we could make a directors cut, but not a good one, lol. What we removed needed to go.

We had already chosen not to add or edit our original SMP books, but since this one released just months ago, we hadn’t even considered the idea. It was too hard to get out the first time. We do love these two and their story. The D/s of the pack hierarchy plays in and is necessary but its more gentle as is required for Karel and Baz.

We spent more time in the nattie world in Ambassador’s Anchor and loved being able to focus there. We hadn’t really shown as much of every facet as we wanted and we hope and plan to still show more. This world we’ve built is so big and we just want to share what we can of it.

We again have a new cover- kind of. We used the new backdrop, but kept the same model. There is something about her with this expression that we wanted to keep, and since it was only just released it still feels new.

And the back blurb:

Karel is haunted by the memory of the man who stripped away her sanity. Sent away to the Alaskan wilderness by her pack Alpha, she struggles to build a new life free of her ex. As she establishes her place as an ambassador working to thwart the Animal Gang she finds herself growing closer to her new Beta. But every time she feels ready to take a step forward with him the ghost of her tormentor pushes her back. How can a dead werewolf stand in the way of her happiness?

Baz, the Beta wolf for the McKinley pack, has been tasked to watch over a visiting ambassador who often seems locked in her own mind. Unable to suppress his need to care, protect, and even love her, he grapples to find the balance between his duty and his desires. With the Animal Gang moving closer into their territory he needs her to recognize her strengths.  In order to dispel her insecurities, Baz will have to uncover her dark past. But is her mental suffering so deep that she’ll never be able to love him back?

All three of these will be available Sunday, so if you don’t have the originals, snap them up. And if you want paperbacks with the new covers, they’ll be up soon after.

We can’t thank any of you enough for your support.

Revisiting Molly and Edo

We loved writing this book. These two characters came to us while we worked on Mechanic’s Mate and insisted we tell their story. We had so much fun with this city girl, researching what was popular in the diesel era. Events, cars, recipes, dating rules, we wanted to know all the things. It was the bee’s knees play even more with the diesel slang dictionary as well.

Working on our second book was actually a bit easier because we learned so much about writing as we completed the first. We still certainly drove our editor crazy with echoes, ellipses, and making Molly too stupid to live (TSTL) at one point. Quite proud to say that this book actually won a prism award in the steampunk category (because dieselpunk unfortunately isn’t a category).

Again, we truly loved the original cover of this book. We had more input and sent this model’s photoshoot as an inspiration and loved the final. We chose to keep a picture of the same model from the same shoot but with a pose similar to the other two (so far) of the series. She’s so cute and so Molly.

and the back blurb:

Born with a special gift, Molly could help others but existed between two worlds--undetectable by one and not fully part of the other. Usually choosing not to interfere in other folks lives, she never employed her abilities to their greatest potential. When the leader of the Animal Gang learns the truth of her skills, Molly’s simple life as a baker in her family’s shop is threatened. Could the Blue Wolf enforcer she’d been pining over help her escape and embrace her gifts . . . or is she just putting his life in danger?

Edo’s entire life had been one exception after another, never the norm on any path his life leads him. Using an ability he sees as mundane, he meets the beautiful baker while on a mission for his alpha. As she is hunted by the rogue gang she entrusts her secrets and her heart to him. But can he protect her in the diesel city and still serve his alpha and pack?

Preorder is up now and will be out on the 13th, with paperback to follow shortly thereafter.

Remember The Mechanic's Mate? It looks a little different.

Our first book is all ours now so we had the opportunity to make some changes. This is the most erotic book in the Diesel War series with a heavy focus on the D/s relationships of the werewolf packs. We got a lot of great reviews and a few not so great ones. So we pondered rewriting some parts because if we were to write this book today, it might be different.

The introduction to this alternate history world that started with a dream is this story. Its meant to set the gritty post diesel war world they live in. It introduces the use of diesel slang, the pack hierarchies, the rogues, and the reorganization of the US into sectors. There is a lot going on in this first installment. We had to step back and recognize that not all books are for all people. Its a hard thing to accept when you see something negative (the Mindy half won’t even read reviews anymore), but its not personal.

I know people have recommended their favorite book or movie, and I hated it. Or that I’ve been annoyed that a story wasn’t what I wanted it to be or the characters didn’t do what I wanted them to do. With all this in mind, we chose to keep Sadie and Domek’s book as it was originally published. Mechanic’s Mate is a dieselpunk, paranormal, erotic romance. Its not a funny steampunk adventure and there is a lot of sex. Plus, no one likes a remake.

We’re proud to have taken risks in this story and forever grateful that our editor Cheryl Yeko and SMP took a chance on us and helped us get it out into the world.

Even though the guts are the same, we have a new cover! While we loved the original and the model is beautiful, we always wished it fit the dieselpunk aesthetic of the book (some of those bad reviews were because of misconceptions based on the cover). We kept the feel the same but switched up to a better representation of our heroine.

And the back blurb:

Abused and on the run, Sadie flees through the woods. For the first time in her life, she craves the blissful silence of nature. Her sire and mate is a monster who hid his inner evil all too well. Her skills as a mechanic now useless, intolerant to the noise and pollution of the city’s diesel engines thanks to her new werewolf status, Sadie’s only hope is the ex-pack of the monster she escaped. But will they accept the dieselhead mate of a rogue?

Domek, the Blue Wolf alpha, has caught the scent of the rogue he’s sworn to hunt down. But he’s shocked to find it attached to a frail, damaged city girl, the most beautiful creature he has ever seen. The desire to take care of her is fierce . . . unexplainable.

How can he protect a woman who has tied the fate of her mortality to the life of a rogue he must destroy?

The ebook will be available October 13 and the paperback will be up within a day or two of that.

Preorders are live!

Sadly, Soul Mate Publishing, our publisher has closed. All rights reverted back to us so we gave The Mechanic’s Mate, The Seer’s Secret, and The Ambassador’s Anchor little facelifts and have put them back up as self published. Preorders are up now for ebook and both paperback and digital will be released on October 13th. None of the internal content has been changed, just the covers.

We’ll post refreshers on the books as well as the new covers this week, so stay tuned.

How is it already April?

This month marks the release of book 3 after a very, very long wait. We are so excited about The Ambassador’s Anchor finally getting into your hands. This was a hard one, with our own setbacks, and then the world’s setbacks we feared we might never finish. It has truly been a labor of love and we hope it shows through Karel and Baz’s story.

We are also over the moon to be a part of the Hot Winter Nights Advent Book Box. It is literally all we ever wanted for Christmas. A new limited edition book, made special for this special occasion, to open every evening for either 15

or 30 days, depending on what tier you choose.

We also will include special digital companions. Seriously, every romance reader’s dream.

Follow our kickstarter for all the news and updates. Hot Winter Nights!

We’ll talk about the authors involved over the next few weeks, so stay tuned!

Thankful for the next Soul Mate Tree release

It's almost Thanksgiving and I'm longing for our Thanksgivings in Denver... we'd get together and invite anyone who didn't have family nearby. In lieu of cooking a turkey we hit up Honey Baked Ham for a ham and a turkey breast, but we cooked all the yummy side dishes. Instead of football we played/watched Xbox mini competitions.

We'll still have fantastic Turkey days this year, and hope you do too. But if you don't have any plans or want to hideaway from your family and just read a book, the next Soul Mate Tree is available now.

Short Excerpt:

Dottie wiped the tears from her face. Damn him, and damn his floosy too. She’d do what her mother constantly threatened her stepdad with, and remove his cock to wear it proudly on a chain around her neck.

I jus’ gotta find a way out of this kooky forest first.

Making her way back onto her feet, she dusted off her dress in a mindless motion. The fabric passed beneath her strokes smooth and dirt free. She studied the once vibrant red dress she’d worn on stage. The satin now appeared drab and colorless. Her bare feet peeked from beneath its hem, as clean as the moment she’d dabbed them dry from her bath. The blind sprint from her dressing room, across town, and up the hill, should have left them covered in filth.

In exasperation, she threw her arms in the air. “Swell. I mus’ be dead and I’m . . .”

She moved away from the tree to scrutinize her surroundings. As much as Dottie hoped she’d end up in heaven, her mother always insisted that, as a willful child trying to pass as something she wasn’t, her final destination would be a bit further down.

The sensation of electricity passing through the air made every hair stand on end as a matter-of-fact reply came from behind. “No, you aren’t dead, but you’re not exactly alive either. You’re in a realm known as the in-between.”

Spinning around, Dottie came face to face with a stranger. Like the tree, he appeared in color, only he wasn’t pink and purple. Instead, a tall man with reddish tan skin, swirling silver eyes, and waist length striking black hair, stared at her as though regarding a ghost. Thick muscular arms crossed over his chest as his shocked expression ease into a slow smirk, highlighting the defined beak-like nose, high cheekbones, and strong chin framing his mouth.

Nervously licking her lips, she couldn’t help but muse, Di Mi. Well hello, sailor.

And a dark paranormal for September

We cannot believe we are already to the ninth novella in the Soul Mate Tree Collection and only one month away from our contribution! We have been looking forward to this one, a dark paranormal by LD Rose.

Heaven is hell without her.

Former Navy SEAL Sebastian “Bash” Lockard died in Afghanistan after leaping on a grenade to save his comrades. Little did he know his act of heroism would grant him a ticket into Heaven’s elite army as one of the few and powerful Archangels. Struggling with his new existence, Bash still retains his human memories, leaving behind a wife he loves with all of his heart. Although he’s forbidden to see her, he can’t resist her lure, or the mortal desires he harbors for her.

As a young widow and nurse, Irene Lockard still mourns her husband two years after his untimely death. His absence is everywhere, and when her best friend weds, she hits an emotional rock bottom. As if summoned from the skies above, Sebastian appears before her, and they share an unforgettable night. But when he once again vanishes, she wonders if she’s truly gone mad with grief.

The only way Sebastian can remain with Irene is if he makes the ultimate sacrifice. But will she overcome her fear of losing him again to another war?

Excerpt:

Her eyes snapped open, her vision blanketed by huge white feathers, before a giant wing shoved her back. Her arms flailed as she fell hard on her tailbone, the impact rattling up her spine and clacking her jaw shut.

Pain and awareness ripped into her, the veil of fantasy torn from her eyes as she gawked at the rail in front of her.

She was outside. In the dark. Ready to jump from her hotel balcony.

Her sharp intake of air scraped her ears, her heart kicking against her ribcage as she covered her gaping mouth with her hand. Holy shit. Did I sleepwalk? Was she really about to plummet to her death from fourteen stories high?

And did a huge bird just save her life?

Backpedaling across the concrete, the air cool against her thighs now that she’d nearly torn her dress in half, she hit the glass of the sliding balcony doors. Reaching up with a shaking hand, she clutched the handle and pulled herself haphazardly to her feet, yanking the door open and stumbling inside. She slammed it shut behind her, the glass rattling from the force of the blow as she flipped the lock closed. Retreating farther, she toppled onto the bed, staring at the night outside with growing horror.

She recounted her steps from when she’d arrived at the hotel. The elevator, the housekeeper, entering the room, sitting, crying, falling asleep, the river, the blood, the panic, the tree—

 The tree.

Climbing the tree, touching its leaves, remembering . . .

A loud thump hit the balcony outside, muted by the thick glass. Her bleary eyes shot to the figure standing on the ledge and she released a cross between a sob and a shriek, then stifled her mouth with a hand.

Tall, bare-chested, his suit jacket and shirt bunched in his fist as he tossed them aside. Tattoos covered his arms, shoulders, and the base of his neck. Closer now, she discerned the pattern of inked wings, pale muscles rippling, lines and cuts he’d never worn before. His dark hair fell a little longer on top, disheveled from the wind, his face still carved with gorgeous edges, but thinner, wearier. His eyes were black holes, endless, consuming. Infinite.

 Sebastian.

His knuckles rapped on the glass, the sound sending a terrified jolt into her nervous system. His eyes bore into hers, cutting through the darkness.

“Reen. Open the door.”

Reen. Her nickname rumbled from his lips, his voice still that resonant timbre she adored. God, some nights she’d pleaded to hear that sound again, just to listen to him speak one last time.

This had to be another dream. He had to be a dream. She was hallucinating.

Christ, had Phillipe spiked her drink?

“Reen.” He grasped the handle, tugged on it, his inked bicep contracting. “I know you see me.”

She couldn’t move, nailed to the bed with fear, paralyzed by disbelief. He pressed both palms flat on the glass, big hands with callused fingers, hands that had memorized every part of her body. He broke eye contact, dipping his head as he murmured, “Please, baby. Let me in.”

As if his plea granted her motor skills, Irene was suddenly on her feet, hurrying across the carpet toward him. She struggled to control her shaking hands, trembles reverberating through her entire body. It took her three tries to flip the latch, and then she backed away, recoiling, afraid of this man who looked so much like her dead lover.

He pulled the slider open in a smooth, fluid movement, the cool ocean breeze escaping into the airless hotel. Setting his sights on her, he stepped over the threshold, his presence filling the room, overwhelming her entirely. When her back hit the main door, the opportunity to flee opened up wide, but she stilled as his scent wafted into her nostrils, a blend of sandalwood and her husband.

 Sebastian. Her Sebastian.

The slider closed behind him, the finality of the sound echoing through her bones, and she couldn’t run.

Not from him. Never from him.

An almost strangled sigh escaped him and he swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat. A gut-wrenching pain glittered in his dark eyes while he drank her in, his gaze skittering over her from head to toe, as if reacquainting himself with his broken disaster of a wife.

Finally, he approached her in the dark, closing the distance between them, and she pressed harder against the door. If he held her, if he so much as touched her, she would be lost to him, squandering any semblance of sanity she’d managed to retain in these awful years without him.

Blistering tears flowed freely down her cheeks as he halted mere inches away, so close, so goddamn close his warmth radiated off his bare chest. He lifted a hand and she flinched, stopping him as if she’d slapped him. The pained expression on his face yanked a wretched sob from her throat, and she just couldn’t believe it, couldn’t believe he stood right there in front of her.

The medal, the flag, the decorated casket, the salute . . . had it all been a lie?

His finger brushed her cheek, tentative, soft, waiting for her to strike. When she didn’t, he cupped her face in his hand, his skin still rough and callused, wiping away her tears with his thumb. She leaned into his touch, unable to resist his warmth, and he framed her face with his free hand, staring into her eyes with a need so raw it stole what little breath she had left in her burning lungs.

“My God.” He whispered the words, as if he didn’t have the strength to give them voice. “I’ve missed you.”

It's August Soul Mate Tree Time!

The August release in the Soul Mate Tree collection is available today. Once Upon an Lady is a regency historical by Addie Jo Ryleigh, so we'll hand this blog over to her.

My new release, Once Upon a Lady, is book eight of The Soul Mate Tree Series and I couldn’t be prouder to share in a venture that showcases the talents of so many amazing romance authors across a variety of genres. When I was first approached by Char Chaffin asking if I’d be interested in joining the project, my first thought was ‘I’ve never written a novella before.’ **gulp** After convincing myself that I could indeed capture an entire story in the length of a novella, I jumped on board. Taking a break from my debut Regency series, Men of Circumstance, I started to toss around ideas and quickly stumbled upon Kate and Jackson.

Lost in duty, if there was anyone needing the assistance of the mystical Soul Mate Tree, it was Kate. And who better to help her discover her destiny than Jackson, a man equally adrift. As soon as I saw the beautiful cover created by Wren Taylor, I knew I had my story.

Their path, navigated by the poetic legend created by Char and Cheryl Yeko, was filled with plenty of obstacles but once they embraced the gift granted by the tree, not even Kate’s ducal father could stand in their way.

The Legend of the Soul Mate Tree:

I am old, I am ancient, my purpose is clear

To give those who are needy a treasure so dear.

They who come to my roots, touch my bark, stroke my leaves

Find the soul of their lives if they but believe.

When I call and you listen, your prize will be great

If your heart remains open and you don’t hesitate.

Do you yearn? Be you lonely? Is your time yet at hand?

Reach for me and I’ll give to you. I’m yours to command.

For your trust, for your faith, keep my secrets untold

And I’ll gift you forever, to have and to hold.

An ancient legend spanning eras, continents, and worlds. To some, it’s nothing more than a dream. To others, a pretty fairy tale handed down through the generations.

For those in critical need of their own happy ending, a gift.

Respectable Lady Katherine Baxton, striving to meet the requirements of her station, has become the ultimate dutiful daughter. And now, the Duke of Blackthorn’s betrothed. Far from a love match, Kate is nevertheless determined to do as expected and marry.

That all changes the night she panics at her impending future and runs, stumbling upon a private grove, a mysterious tree. . . and a half-naked man.

The youngest son of a viscount widely thought to have purchased his title, Jackson Cooper demonstrates his disdain for the aristocracy by affording himself every luxury available—drinking, wenching, and gambling—while eschewing anything representing the ton. Jackson has little care for his reputation and no desire to marry. His escape from London is all but complete.

Until fate—in the form of a beautiful, mysterious lady—interrupts his plans, enticing him with the very thing he never wanted.

Short Excerpt:

Kate felt his approach before she saw him. Which wasn’t all that surprising since her body had remained mindful of his presence. Fighting the impulse proved fruitless.

When his tall frame blocked the sun and cast her in shadow, she knew besides giving him a direct cut, she had no escape. If only she hadn’t ventured from her sister’s side. At the time, abandoning Helena had been her singular option since their slow stroll through the gathering had traveled too close to the very man standing beside her. She’d been delaying the inevitable.

Kate was now alone, as she tried to keep her attention on the lawn activities before her, hoping no one would witness what was about to happen.

“Aren’t sprites confined to the trees?” His deep voice washed over her.

She didn’t turn to acknowledge him. “How nice to see you properly dressed for once.”

His chuckle warmed her. “Are you following me?”

An unladylike snort refused to be repressed. “Hardly. You are rather difficult to overlook, being the only unknown face here.”

“That’s not true. You’ve seen my face . . . as well as other, more interesting parts.”

Kate wished she’d listened to her sister and worn a bonnet. Anything to mask the heat flaring in her cheeks.

Thankfully he remained at her side and hadn’t a clear view of her face. “We have not been introduced. I can’t be seen speaking to you.”

“Then let us go where we can't be seen.”

Her heart raced at his boldness. Why was this man so tempting? She was spoken for, though still unofficially. Proper ladies didn’t follow strange men to private locations, regardless of their marital status. “Absolutely not.”

“Even if I have something of yours?”

Blast! Her ring. Given her luck lately, she would have lost it in the grove of all places. Her aunt would toss in her grave knowing Kate had misplaced her gift.

“A true gentleman would return it.”

His deep laugh caused her pulse to flutter. “I'm no gentleman. Or haven't you heard?”
